Tales from Japan: Explorers in RiaUta

This comic is based on an actual exchange that happened between myself and friend of mine while I was living in Japan. I was only slightly more kimoi back then, and while I regret those mistakes of youth, they do make for good comics. There’s no real punchline, but I think the general situation is funny enough on its own. I’m not super hot on the art, but I don’t think it’s terrible.

And yes, I did actually get a picture. Here it is:

RiaUta is a real place. So real that there are photos of its interior that I used for reference.

By the way, new Mistakes of Youth artwork up on the art blog.

I take it you weren’t able to get permission from yourself to show your face in that photo?

Wow, I can totally relate to this! Despite not having been to a maid cafe (yet!).

There’s always the mental barrier between what you perceive as being kimoi, and what you perceive as being “That’s over the line, even for me”. And it’s fun to cross that line occasionally, indulge in the NHK ni Youkoso! style otakuness. And we do it with vivacity and take pleasure in it. And look back on it later with regret. Probably just completely mis-interpreted what you had in mind… or over-thought it.

Does your friend look as much like John Romero as the comic makes it appear?

Wait, what. What’s so gross about asking for a photo from a cosplayer waitress?

Also, the last 2 lines were perfect. I’m laughing at the back and forth there.

    Exactly!

    >>InazumaKick
    Probably over-thinking :V

    >>LORd
    lol, sadly not.

    >>Hey there
It is a little gross. But then again, you’re already in a cosplay cafe, so you may as well go all the way…

I think gross would revolve around going “MI-MI-MIRUKURU MIKURU-RU MI MI MIRUKURU MIKURU-RU” every time she comes near your table.
